You can sign up to join The Session here.
Search through the member profiles for specific words or phrases (or leave this blank to view all member profiles):
Everyone is free to browse around The Session, look at tunes and read comments. However, if you're a member, you'll also be able to contribute tunes and post your own comments.
Best of all, members can select tunes they like and add them to their own personal tunebook. You can then download an ABC file of all the tunes in your tunebook. This is a lot easier than downloading tunes individually and then cutting and pasting them into a larger ABC file.
The email has been sent but has probably been caught by your spam filters: Yahoo and Hotmail are notoriously over-zealous when it comes to spam filtering. Check your junk mail folder and adjust your filtering settings if you can.
To have your username and password resent to you, just use the "forgotten your password?" link which appears on every page of the site.
You could be entering either your username or password incorrectly. Remember, both are case-sensitive. Make sure you're not mistaking the number one for the letter ell or the number zero for the letter oh.
Click on the "forgotten your password?" link to have your username and password mailed to you. You can them copy them from the email (ctrl+c) and paste them into the log on form (ctrl+v).
Once you're logged on, the form will replaced with a message saying "You are logged on as [your username]".
Close your browser.
When you sign up to become a member, you will be asked to choose a username and give your email address.
An email will then be sent to you, comfirming your username and providing you with a password.
You can then use the combination of username and password to log on to The Session and begin submitting tunes, posting comments and adding tunes to your tunebook. You can change your password to something more memorable at any time.
Yes.
In order to receive your password, you must provide a valid email address. This is a precautionary measure to stop timewasters and trolls from posting mindless comments to The Session.
Your email address will NOT be displayed anywhere on The Session.
Your email address will NOT be given or sold to any third party.
Your email address WILL be used to block you from The Session if you break the rules while you're here.
Be civil. It's as simple as that.
Foul language or aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated.
This may sound a bit strict in comparison to a "real" session in a pub setting, but try to remember that the online Irish music community consists of people of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
Log on with your username and password. Go to the tunes section and search for the tune you're looking for.
If the tune isn't already in the database and you have followed the instructions on-screen to refine your search, you'll prompted to click on a link to request the tune.
You need to be logged on with your username and password.
Go to the section where you want to submit something and look for the link right under where your log-on status appears.
You will then be guided step by step through the submission process.
To submit a recording, you need to provide the artist's name, the album name and the track titles.
To submit a link, you need to choose a category for that link, provide a URL and a brief description of the website.
To submit a tune, you will need to write out the tune in ABC format.
At the beginning of the submission process for discussions, some guidelines will appear. Please read them.
You can submit as many tunes, discussions and links as you like... But please don't do it all at once.
One tune or a couple of recordings in a twenty four period is plenty for just one person.
This ensures that everyone has time to check out the newest tunes without being inundated by a sudden flood. It also prevents any one person from overly dominating things.
Remember, it's not about quantity - it's far nicer to have one well-transcribed tune with some good comments than ten hastily submitted new tunes.
Anyway, The Session isn't going anywhere so there's plenty of time to submit all the tunes you want.
You don't. Instead, add a comment explaining that the session is no longer active. Also, under the "details" tab, update the schedule so that no days are selected.
It is far, far more useful for people to be able to find information on a defunct session than to find no information at all.
Again, you need to be logged on with your username and password.
Once you are logged on, you will see a simple form that you can fill out at the end of each discussion (or under "Comments" for tunes and recordings).
ABC is a great way of passing on tunes by writing the notes out in plain text.
It's very straightforward and easy to learn.
Check out the links section for more detailed ABC resources.
When you submit a tune, the tune type determines the time signature: jigs are in 6/8, polkas are in 2/4, etc.
Because slow airs come in a variety of time signatures (3/4,6/8, etc.), there can be no category for "slow airs" just as there can be no category for "speedy tunes" or "really great ones".
Besides, transcribing slow airs is notoriously difficult and frankly beyond the scope of this website. For that reason, The Session is "limited" to dance tunes.
No. Duplicate tune submissions aren't allowed. If you have an alternate setting of a tune that's already listed at The Session, you can post your version in the comments to the existing tune.
Well... The Session isn't really intended for that. If you do post one of your own compositions, then you must do your "penance", so to speak, by balancing each original composition with about five trad tunes.
The Session allows you to collect tunes and add them to a virtual tunebook.
The tunebook is really just a list of tunes. You can organise this list by tune name, type of tune or key signature.
You can download the entire tunebook as a single ABC file. You can also print out the sheetmusic of all the tunes in your tunebook.
First of all, to add a tune to your tunebook or to simply view your tunebook, you must be logged on to The Session with your username and password.
If you are viewing a tune that you have added to your tunebook, simply click on "This tune is in your tunebook".
Alternatively, go to your member profile and click on "Tunebook". The quickest way to get to your member profile is to click on the "You are logged on as..." link in the navigation list.
Sure. Just log on and go to your member profile. You will see options there for changing any of your details.
You can choose not to receive the weekly newsletter updates.
Again, just log on and go to your member profile. You can subscribe and unsubscribe to email updates at the click of a button.
If you are going to be away for a while, you might want to unsubscribe. Please, please, please do this if you set up one of those annoying "Auto-response" messages while you're away. Thanks.
No. Absolutely not.
It's strictly one membership per person here at The Session. Anyone caught faking a new membership will be expelled.
Remember, you can update your email address, username and other preferences from your member profile so you should have no reason to want more than one membership.
Right here (copy or drag to your newsreader):
Tunes, Recordings, Sessions, Events, Discussions and Links.
There are two things you can do.
You can ask your question in the "Discussions" section of the site. Other members of The Session can then answer your question. This is probably the best place to post questions about the music or ABC problems.
You can also write to me (Jeremy) but I can't promise as quick a response.
